Periodic update (2025 December)
NP is coming; Jamf-on-update (again); jupyterhub maintenance. Updates from summer 2025 and August 2025.
Network Programme §
Campus-wide networking: Network Programme (NP) is now actually planned for summer 2026. We expect to learn the details of the actual work, and final dates and duration estimates (six months at least), imminently. This will include a complete recabling of the building network, and systematic provision of Eduroam throughout.
Desktops and laptops §
‘Jamf’/‘MyMac’: all recent Apple devices will be retrospectively enrolled at the time of the next OS update. This time! (This was supposed to happen for the update to macOS 26.0, but didn't for some occult reason, reportedly now fixed).
The corresponding process for Windows devices (‘Intune’/‘MyDevice’) is also under way, but is less proactive. SSD counts as a ‘managed’ device, for desktops rather than laptops.
Windows 10 is now well past end-of-life. COSE IT is catching up with finding and upgrading machines across the school (and may soon be contacting owners of machines still on Win10). If you have any Windows machines which are only sporadically turned on, they will need to be updated at the earliest opportunity. If they are in a lab (so that updating represents a technical challenge), talk to IT about the correct mitigations.
Printing
The campus has moved to a new pull-print management system. The details are on the IT Services website, but are, right now, still somewhat in flux. Those on managed devices need not (and indeed cannot) do anything in response – they should be updated transparently. Those on other devices might be well advised to wait until the system has settled down a little.
To retrieve printing jobs, you'll need your staff-card and a PIN, findable at https://uog.uk.uniflowonline.com.
It will (again, hooray!) be possible to submit jobs for printing by uploading a PDF to a web form (no print drivers required).
A0 printing: this has become a College service (de facto), but is being discontinued. The University print unit charges for printing.
Services §
- College-wide GPU compute service: the hardware is now in place, so this is now just waiting for integration into SSO (etc). Probably available from early 2026.
- Campus-wide GitHub Classroom: we now have access to this, but user-administration details need to be ironed out. Available imminently.
- JupyterHub maintenance this month (week beginning 15 December); there is renewed talk of a possible college service next year.
Personnel changes §
Andrew Fraser will now be working for COSE Infrastructure in a sysadmin role, rather than ‘service delivery’. Thus he will no longer count as ‘our’ IT support for labs, in either a nominal or de facto capacity.
